Hello all;
My name is Taylor Headlough and my chosen concentration areas are sociology and health care. I chose these two concentrations because originally I had started my college career on the path of nursing. I completed the first two years of prerequisites for the nursing program at ASU but in the end I was not able to compete with the high GPA that was setting the bar. After I was denied entrance I began looking into other degrees offered at ASU that I would find interesting and also one that would fit with some of the classes that I had already taken.
These concentrations are reflective of my identity because my passion for medicine and people is what has motivated me throughout my education experience. Health care is a broad subject with many positives and negatives however it is essential for all people and the environment itself therefore sociology plays an equal role in understanding the issue(s) as a bigger whole.
The site of my applied study is Planned Parenthood. I hope to learn more about what Planned Parenthood (PPH) is doing within the community especially regarding public policy within the state of Arizona. It will be very interesting to see how my two areas of concentration will take an active affect within a place of business as well as within the community itself.
Some of the responsibilites that I have been involved in so far have been meeting with volunteers of PPH who I will be leading in public policy events, brainstorming ideas for events that would be good to get the voice of PPH out there and I participated in my very first phone bank for PPH. These responsibilities reflect different areas of knowledge that I have learned specifically pertaining to socially how an organization is building itself from the ground up to work for a similar cause AND medically how this organization is aiding in the health of women all over the state.
My future goals after graduation are unclear at this point in time but I feel like PPH is showing me another piece to the puzzle that will in the end help direct me in the kind of career I want to continue.
Hello, my name is Josie. I am glad to hear you kept with your passion of being in health care field after your mishaps with Nursing School. Most people would have gave up due to frustration but as the saying says "you made lemonade with your lemons". Plant Parenthood is a great organization for women. Although their practices maybe controversial but their mission has saved, improved and educated many women. Your passion for people and healthcare field will take you far in your professional life. A job offer after graduation shouldn't be hard to find. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteHi I'm Kristen, and I also am a sociology major. I am aware of your sight and without them I wouldn't be able to get great inexpensive exams. Like many of us I do not have health insurance, so planned parenthood offers services I wouldn't be able to afford elsewhere with out health care. People can say what they want about planned parenthood, but I think that is a great place for women to tuen to when they have no where else to go. Anonymous people have made large donations to the business and with that money they put it towards certain services to clients that cannot afford to pay in full. With health care being your other field, hopefully you can research and find answers to why this country hasn't been able to come up with a good solid healthcare reform. We all know this country needs it! At least you picked a field that will never go out of work, you'll always have a job ;-)
ReplyDeleteHi Taylor,
ReplyDeleteI heard that the nursing program at ASU is almost impossible to get into and that you need a 4.0. Lately, it seems like I have had number of students like you who are good students but due to the shortage of spots in the nursing program had to go another direction. Two students that I had last semester are going on to do their nursing degree at Chamberlain college. I don't know anything about program except a few of your BIS peers will be there in the fall completing nursing degrees. It might be something to look into if you are still interested in nursing. It sounds like your internship at PPH is a good fit for you and perhaps working in public health was what you were meant to do? Through the internship I hope that you are able to gain the experience that you need working in public health to know if its something that you would like to pursue further in the future or not.
